Disease Name: Urethral Stricture
Introduction:
Urethral Stricture is a condition where the urethra becomes narrowed due to scar tissue, inflammation, or injury. This narrowing obstructs the flow of urine and can cause significant discomfort and urinary complications. It commonly affects males and, if left untreated, may lead to severe problems including urinary retention or infections.
Causes of Urethral Stricture:
- Injury or trauma to the pelvis or perineum
- Catheter or instrument insertion into the urethra
- Sexually transmitted infections (like gonorrhea or chlamydia)
- Radiation therapy in pelvic region
- Post-surgical scarring (e.g., prostate surgery)
- Inflammation due to infections or conditions like lichen sclerosus
Symptoms of Urethral Stricture:
- Slow or weak urine stream
- Straining to urinate
- Frequent urge to urinate
- Incomplete bladder emptying
- Urinary tract infections
- Blood in urine (hematuria)
- Pain during urination
Diagnosis of Urethral Stricture:
- Urine flow test (Uroflowmetry)
- Retrograde urethrogram (X-ray with contrast)
- Cystoscopy (direct camera inspection)
- Ultrasound or imaging tests
Treatment Options:
- Urethral dilation (gradual stretching)
- Internal urethrotomy (endoscopic incision)
- Urethroplasty (surgical reconstruction)
- Urinary diversion or stents in rare cases
